French police have named the dog who died in the police terror raid in Saint-Denis today as Diesel.

In a tweet, Police National said the Belgian shepherd dog, or Malinois, who was “killed by terrorists”.

"Diesel, a seven-year-old Malinois, police dog for RAID [France's anti-terrorist police unit], was killed by terrorists in the ongoing operation," they wrote.

Unconfirmed reports suggested Diesel was killed when a female suicide bomber activated her explosive vest.

Two terror suspects are dead and five arrested after the police shootout in the Paris suburb to catch the mastermind behind Friday's terror attacks.

One of the deceased was a woman who blew herself up wearing a suicide vest.

Abdelhami Abaaoud, 27, was believed to be living in Syria but has been identified by police sources as the target of the overnight operation .

Swat teams launched a pre-dawn raid in Saint-Denis, just north of the capital, and surrounded the apartment block.

It is believed up to six terror suspects were hiding in an apartment building and police have blocked off the area around Place Jean Jaures.

It is understood that the 'mastermind' behind Friday's attack, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, is among the suspects involved in the shootout.

Another of the suspects is believed to be Salah Abdeslam, who is the subject of an international arrest warrant after Friday's terror attacks - which left 129 people dead.
