CCTV appeal after woman raped in horrifying attack on city centre canal towpath
A woman was raped on a city centre canal towpath in a horrific attack after a night out.

The 39-year-old victim had been out on Canal Street in the Gay Village in Manchester with a group of friends prior to the shocking assault, police said.

After becoming separated from her friends, she was approached by a man as she stood outside the AXM bar before walking with him down Whitworth Street and onto Princess Street.

The pair then walked onto Attwood Street at the side of the multi-storey car park and then onto the entrance to the canal path before he raped her.

Police said the woman had been left traumatised by the attack, which took place at around 4am on Sunday, November 8, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Police say that another man was also seen with the attacker on Canal Street.

Detectives have now released CCTV footage of two men they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

One man is white, in his mid-20s, 6ft, of slim build with fair-coloured hair. He was wearing a dark Parka jacket.

The second man is white, in his mid-20s, of slim build and he had short dark hair.

Detective Inspector Damian Simpson said: “Clearly this is a set of disturbing circumstances that has left the victim truly upset. There are currently specially trained officers with the woman to help get through this traumatic time.
We have launched a rape investigation and are currently studying at CCTV to see who is responsible for this horrendous crime

“From the information we have received, we believe the two men may be known to each other and we have stepped up patrols in the city centre.

“If you believe you witnessed the attack or have any information that may help us, I would urge you to contact us as soon as possible.

“We have also released two images of two men we would like to speak to in connection with the incident and would urge them to come forward.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 1911 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
