On July 15, when Patidar quota leader Hardik Patel was doing a massive road show in Surat celebrating his release on bail in the sedition case, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel was also in the same city, tweeting how Surat, one of the two cities that made it to the first 20 smart city lists in the country, was open defecation free – a target that could not have been achieved without the community of safai kamdars, the cleaners.
