In a stunning rebuke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling alliance, a group of parties opposed to his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scored a decisive electoral victory in the northern Indian state of Bihar. The contest in this electorally critical heartland state pitted Mr Modi's National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition against the " Mahagatbandhan ", or the " grand alliance " of anti-BJP parties.
